This article covers the problems of finding a company that offers a handicap RV rental in Illinois for people with disabilities who require special access.
As in most other states, finding a rental company that has wheelchair adapted RVs for rent in Illinois can be something of an uphill struggle, but not an impossible one.
A search on the search engines brings up a few possibilities that are advertising adapted RVs for rent in the state, so I decided to dig a little deeper to see what I could come up with.
Renting a Wheelchair Accessible RV in Illinois
I found that it is possible to book through peer-to-peer rental platforms, specifying a custom wheelchair-accessible RV for rent that features a wide rear ramp or wheelchair lift on the side.
Platforms such as ″Outdoorsy[1]″ or ″RVshare[2]″ can sometimes turn up find private owners who have ADA-accessible motorhomes or accessibility-modified RVs with rear ramps. I also found that ″Winnebago Motor Homes[3]″ in Rockford, IL specialize in accessibility-modified vehicles that feature platform wheelchair lifts as well as roll-in showers and power transfer seats.
Also featuring wheelchair adapted RVs for rent, my search turned up ″RV Rentals of America[4]″ and ″Cummings Mobility[5]″ although I do believe they operate on a first come first serve basis. Meaning you need to book well in advance to be in with a chance of getting an RV to rent when you want it.
Affordable RV Hire
One other point I need to mention is the cost involved in renting a specially adapted RV.
As I have already covered in previous posts, the rental costs are higher than for standard RVs. This is mainly due to much reduced rolling stock being available and the high cost to the rental company of buying a ready-made wheelchair RV or having a standard one customized with all the necessary features to meet the needs of its users.
While my previous posts were written several years ago, the reasons for higher costs are the same. It's just the actual rental prices are a lot more than they once were.
I'd advise getting touch with a local rental company of there is one and asking for a cost quote to see what you're going to be up against.
Summary
Finding a rental company with wheelchair-adapted RVs available is possible in Illinois, but finding one that has one available might be tough unless you can book a long time in advance.
However, the fact that there is some availability and there are companies that advertise as such means that you may get lucky and strike gold on your next telephone call.
